Making And Decorating of Chariots (Puri Rath Yatra 2024)

Every year, new chariots for Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are created using wood from particular trees, such as phassi and dhausa, along with additional materials like flowers and ornamental textile pieces. The three chariots’ differing sizes show a hierarchy among the three gods. The 16-wheeled chariot of Lord Jagannath is known as Nandighosh. Taladvaja is the 14-wheeled chariot of His elder brother, Lord Balabhadra. The smallest of the three, the Padmadhvaja chariot of Subhadra has twelve wheels. These raths are disassembled and the wood utilized as fuel in temple kitchens when the chariot celebration ends.
