Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata passed away in a hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday night. He was 86 years old. News of his illness was in the media two days ago, however he said in a post that he is fine and there is nothing to worry about.
Personal Profile: Parents separated in childhood, grandmother brought him up
Born on 28 December 1937 to Naval and Sunu Tata, Ratan was the great-grandson of Tata Group founder Jamshedji Tata. They belong to Parsi religion. His parents separated when he was young and he was raised by his grandmother. In 1991, he was made the chairman of the Tata Group.
Ratan Tata got married four times. Tata says he would have married once when he was in the US. But, his grandmother called him suddenly and at that moment India’s war with China started. They stuck here and the girl got married.

Ratan Tata was a book lover. He loved reading success stories. In an interview, he said that after retirement, he is devoting time to his hobby. Tata did not like much conversation from childhood. He used to talk only about important things.
He loved listening to 60s-70s songs. He used to say, ‘If I can play classical music, I will be very satisfied. I love Chopin. Symphony sounds good too. Likes Beethoven, Tchaikovsky. But I wish I could play the piano myself.

Asked about cars, Tata said that he is very fond of cars. He said, ‘I am fond of both old and new cars. Particularly interested in their style and their mechanism. That’s why I buy them.
Work Profile: Chairman for 21 years, increased profit of Tata Group 50 times
Joined the family business in 1962. Initially, he worked on the shop floor of Tata Steel. After this he continuously moved up to management positions. In 1991 J.R.D. Tata stepped down and the group was headed by Ratan Tatam.
On turning 75 in 2012, Tata relinquished executive functions. During his 21 years, Tata Group’s profits increased 50 times. Much of this revenue came from overseas sales of popular Tata products such as Jaguar-Land Rover vehicles and Tetley.
After stepping down as chairman, he appointed 44-year-old Cyrus Mistry as his successor. His family was the largest individual shareholder in the group. However, over the next few years, tensions rose between Mistry and Tata.
In October 2016, Mistry was ousted from the Tata board after less than four years with the full support of Ratan Tata. Tata remained chairman until a new successor was named in February 2017.
Philanthropy: Donated Rs 500 crore during the COVID-19 pandemic Ratan was deeply involved in Tata Trusts, the Tata Group’s philanthropic arm. This arm of the Tata Group operates in sectors such as education, healthcare and rural development. Throughout his career, Ratan Tata ensured that 60-65% of Tata Sons’ dividends were used for charitable causes. Ratan Tata donates Rs. 500 crore was donated.
Ratan Tata donated $50 million to his alma mater Harvard Business School to establish an executive center. His contributions have earned him global respect, furthering his legacy as a philanthropist and visionary.
